A few episodes ago I talked about Donald Trump destroying the Christian Church. In the following weeks Jerry Falwell, Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham), Pat Robertson and other Christian leaders have endorsed Donald Trump.
When I asked Christians what they like about Donald Trump they almost never have a real answer. They pretty much like the way he talks, and speaks his mind. They like that he is a business man, tells it like it is and they say he’s honest etc…
Now most people know that literally none of that is true. Real businessmen do not run almost half a dozen businesses into the ground, telling it like it is does not include bullying and tearing apart others and honest isn’t a word you use to describe someone who lies almost every time he talks.
Donald Trump is greedy, prideful, arrogant, he openly admits to bribing politicians, he’s openly racist, treats woman like garbage, insults and bullies anyone who disagrees with him and he has borrowed billions with no intention of ever paying it back and calls himself a genius businessman because of it. He even has a plan to kill as many muslims as possible, as he destroys their property, enslaves them and steals their oil!
The crazy thing is, many Christians want Donald Trump to be the President of the United States of America, The most powerful leader on the planet earth BECAUSE of these traits, not in spite of them.
Put another way: Christians who support Donald Trump want him in office precisely because he is everything that their faith forbids.
Amazingly, Donald Trump wouldn’t even QUALIFY to be a member of a lot of Christian churches. For crying out loud, the guy owns strip clubs, casinos & has been divorced 3 times after openly cheating on 2 of his ex wives.
I know there are Christians listening to this show, I know because I get a TON of emails and messages thanking me for calling him out for who he is. But it bothers me. It really genuinely bothers me that I have to point things like this out to begin with.
I don’t know why I can’t see myself as part of the mainstream Christian church. Maybe it’s because I went to Bible college, maybe it’s because I’ve memorized entire chapters of the new testament and maybe it’s because I learned over the years that the teachings of Jesus are more than just religious doctrine, they are a philosophy centered on love and respect for others. A way of life that, when applied, can actually improve your life and help you to overcome immediate challenges and avoid big problems in the future.
What I know for sure though, is that Jesus was incredibly specific about how we, as Christians, should be treating others. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. Love your enemies. Jesus was a man who taught that we should not seek revenge, we should give water to the thirsty, feed those who are hungry and offer clothes to the naked. He was very specific about forgiving others and treating them with kindness and never hate weather they were believers or not.
4 Questions for the Christians in my audience who support Donald Trump
What part of building a wall between Mexico and the United states is doing good to those who hate you?
When Jesus said “bless those that curse you” do you think he meant for you to ban others from entering the country based on their religious beliefs?
Do you think Jesus would approve of waterboarding? If so, give an example of a time Jesus hurt someone, or advocated for someone else to hurt another person.
When Syrians, fleeing from their country, trying to save their children and doing everything they can to stay alive beg us to help them, do you think Jesus would be proud of the way the Christian church and the conservatives in this country united in anger, fear and hatred to reject them? Are you proud of letting these mothers, fathers and children die?
I used to chuckle a little bit when I saw people wearing the WWJD bracelets when I was a kid. I thought it was simplistic back then, but now I wonder if it would be a good idea to bring back the What Would Jesus Do movement.
I look at many christians today and compare him to the teachings of Jesus and I don’t see the connection. I am not ashamed to be a Christian. I am, however, embarrassed to be lumped in with conservative christians. I think it’s time to stop watching the news and pick up that dusty bible.
Because I can guarantee you Jesus would never in a million years vote for Donald Trump. And neither should you.
